MAGAZINE PUBLISHING ARTICLES
AN INSIGHT INTO
PUBLISHING YOUR OWN COMMUNITY MAGAZINE
A
series of brief articles in response to some of the questions submitted
to me over recent months in relation to publishing a community magazine.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I EXPECT TO PAY
FOR THE PRINTING OF MY MAGAZINE?
How much you might have to pay to get your magazine printed is a subject you
will need to investigate by contacting all the local printers in your area and
requesting quotes
WHAT
START-UP COSTS ARE INVOLVED?
Surprisingly with a little thought and pre-planning, start up costs can be
minimal and as outlined in my report, I began publishing my very first
magazine with absolutely no capital investment whatsoever...
IS
IT POSSIBLE TO TURN IT INTO A FULL-TIME OCCUPATION?
Put
simply - yes. It
all depends on you of course, and no matter what facts I present to you,
unless you want it and are prepared to work...
WHAT
SOFTWARE SHOULD I USE?
Ideally,
you should use whatever you feel comfortable with. For
almost three-years I compiled both my magazines using nothing more than a
Microsoft Word newsletter template..
COMMUNITY
MAGAZINES DO NOT HAVE TO RELY ON ADVERTISING
Contrary to widespread belief, community magazines do not have to rely
on advertising for income...
CAN
ANYONE PUBLISH A COMMUNITY MAGAZINE?
Publishing a community magazine is much easier than many people realise
but of course it wouldn't be suitable for everyone...
CAN
YOU ACHIEVE HIGH CIRCULATION RATES FOR YOUR MAGAZINE?
The number of copies of your own community magazine that you can
realistically distribute around your home community is directly
proportional to your towns population...
HOW
MUCH SHOULD I CHARGE FOR MY MAGAZINE?
You must price your magazine so that it gives you a good return on your
monthly investment. Don't make the mistake of pricing your magazine too
low in the belief that it will generate more sales..
IS
THERE SUFFICIENT CONTENT FOR A COMMUNITY MAGAZINE?
Whatever type of magazine you choose to publish requires a great deal of
content and it is easy to see why some people have concerns about obtaining
sufficient quantities of material to publish in a community magazine.
