HOW MUCH SHOULD I EXPECT TO PAY
FOR PRINTING MY MAGAZINE?
How much you might have to pay to get your magazine printed is a subject
you will need to investigate by contacting all the local printers in your area
and requesting quotes. There are a large number of print houses to be found
online too, often with very favourable rates, but delivery of your magazines
may pose problems and incur additional expense, so I suggest you try to find a
reliable and cost effective printer in your own locality.
I have found it a great advantage to deal with a local printer, someone you
can get to know and trust and with whom you can build a good working
relationship. This is important, as all the time and effort you have expended
on the compilation of your magazine will ultimately be in their hands and it
is up to them to turn your visions into reality.
Ask to see some samples of their current work and, having decided on what
format your own magazine will take and how many pages it will comprise,
request a quote for the printing of your own magazine. You should have a rough
idea of the number of copies you expect to be able to sell but I have always
requested a quote for 1,000 copies, with an additional quote for any copies in
excess of that quantity. This has always given me favourable terms and
although the cost for the first 1,000 copies may at first seem somewhat
excessive you will discover that the individual price of each copy of your
magazine decreases as you increase your order.
When I first decided to use the services of a local printer I visited
several printers and received quotes ranging from £450 per 1,000 copies to
almost £800 per 1,000 copies for the same mono magazine. Having decided on the
cheaper option I was able to negotiate a price of £25 for each additional 100
copies.
You will have to negotiate the best terms for your own published magazine
depending on the number of magazines you expect to be distributing.
